Dog Manager Job Description
Our mission is to return lost cats and dogs to their owners and find loving homes for those that have no home. We promote the compassionate treatment of animals everywhere. We work to accomplish this through our core values:
- Compassion and aid to all animals, by providing care and shelter to those cats and dogs needing loving homes.
- Community support for those who have pets or wish to have a loving pet. This includes helping those in the community who may have to give up their pets.
Job Summary
The Dog Manager is an individual who is a team leader promoting a positive work culture for our volunteers. They collaborate with the dog health team to oversee the daily care of the shelter animals (dogs). Provides guidance to the volunteers who care for them and works to reunite strays with their owners. The dog manager works to ensure protocols are followed to give the best care possible to the animals. They provide and maintain a safe, sanitary, humane atmosphere for all the shelter’s animals, volunteers and staff. They are a community representative for PAL and must conduct themselves in a professional manner.
Classification:
Full-time (approximately 40 hours per week), nonexempt (hourly wage). Or possible job share.

A Supervisor or Supervisory Team, and The Board

Emmett, Idaho
Qualifications:
- Minimum of a high school diploma. Must be 18 years of age or older with no felony convictions. A background check will be done.
- One plus years previous experience in an animal-related setting preferred.
- A genuine interest in animals and their well-being.
- Compassion for all animals, regardless of their condition.
- Commitment to the mission values, goals and success of PAL.
- A proven ability to handle multiple tasks in a busy, physically and emotionally-demanding workplace environment. Has the ability to prioritize daily tasks and manage time appropriately.
- Highly motivated, out-going, polite, professional team player with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, volunteers and the public.
- Must be comfortable training, mentoring and providing feedback to staff and volunteers.
- Must demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills.
- Must remain flexible under pressure, have attention to detail and excellent organizational skills. Has a desire to learn and the ability to stay open-minded.
- Should exhibit a positive attitude, common sense, flexibility, and teamwork with ability to exercise independent judgment.
- Must work well with the public, including children, persons of varied racial, ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual preference, and with individuals who are differently-abled.
General Position Duties:
- Maintain a clean, well-organized working environment.
- Oversight of the daily sanitation of kennels and dog runs according to the policies and procedures. Assure all animals are cared for, including food, water, daily exercise and appropriate living conditions. Monitor the health and behavior of animals. Work with the dogs to assess behavior and enhance their training with basic commands (sit, stay, etc.).
- Assess and oversee dog intake.
- Oversee indoor/outdoor dog kennel placement.
- Create and update kennel food chart. Keep food inventory up to par and resupply as needed.
- Administer common medications and create a medication schedule as needed, such as de-wormer, pain medications, and Bordetella nasal vaccine.
- Assist office staff to make vet appointments and arrange for transport. Perform occasional transport of animals if needed.
- Assist with updating records in ASM (Animal Shelter Management) for dogs and dog shift volunteers.
- Suggest and implement behavior and kennel enrichment programs. Initiate dog pairing and introductions for play groups.
- Provide marketing support and take photos of dogs to post on social media and update comments about the dog’s personality.
- Reunite strays with their owners with assistance from the office staff.
- Facilitate meet-and-greets along with office staff. Perform dog introductions with potential adopters or foster families.
- Oversee dog shift volunteers and assist when needed in the performance of the daily dog kennel routines. Assist with and oversee training of new volunteers.
- Be the first point of contact for questions or concerns from staff regarding the dogs.
Customer Service:
Be familiar with shelter policies and procedures and provide general information to visitors. Provide exceptional customer service.
General Guidelines:
- Maintain a neat and well-groomed personal appearance.
- Wear closed-toed shoes and clothing appropriate for working with dogs.
- Comply with all facility safety protocols.
- Assist and oversee cleaning standards in the dog kennel and yard.
- Carry out other duties as assigned by supervisor(s).
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
- The shelter environment requires working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
- May include interactions with the public in an emotionally-charged environment.
- Animal handling required; while all adoptable animals have health and behavior screening, by nature of the industry, there may be occasional exposure to dead, injured, sick, unruly, vicious and/or dangerous animals in addition to possible exposure to parasites and infectious diseases.
- May require driving of personal vehicle for shelter business. Must maintain a valid driver’s license and good driving record. Driver’s information will be submitted to the office.
- Workday includes walking, standing, sitting, bending, squatting, lifting (occasionally up to 50 lbs), answering telephones, and using a computer, working with a variety of cleaning agents and working in an environment with daily changes in climate.
Hours:
Full-Time, approximately 40 hours/week, commonly a 5-day schedule, with some nights and weekends. Final schedule to be determined based on organizational needs. If this is a job share situation, schedules will be determined.
Wage:
$19-$23/hour depending on experience, certifications, proficiency in job tasks, and ability to work cooperatively while fostering the mission of the organization.
