Deciding to give up a pet can be difficult. We understand that there are times when families must consider surrendering their pet. An unexpected life event such as illness, death or unplanned move may make caring for a pet seem impossible. Other times, people think they must give up their pet because they do not know how to handle particular behavioral problems. Problems such as chewing, excessive barking, scratching/chewing on furniture, potty training and allergies can be overcome with a little research and training.
If your challenge is mainly a financial one, please know that PAL offers a Pet Food Pantry and a supply Storefront for Gem County residents. Our goal is to help you keep your family intact. Contact us for more information.
We encourage you to exhaust all other options before surrendering your pet. If you feel you have no other option, we do accept owner-surrendered pets (on a case by case basis) when we have space. If we do accept your pet, we will require a fee to help cover the costs to rehome the pet.
Here is a list of resources that may be of help:

Before surrendering your pets, we encourage you to try rehoming them yourselves. This process is much easier on the pet since they never have to enter the stressful shelter environment. Here are a couple options for rehoming your pet yourselves.
